for a salary of £360 from lat January, 1924, my reason for taking this view being that it seemed logical that if

service for one year on £320 was to be regarded as so increasing an officer's value in his new post that he was worth £330, service on that salary for 3 years should be regarded as further increasing his value to a proportionate extent. On further consideration, however, I am not sure that I was right as the logical basis of the Regulation is not quite clear, for it may be observed that, while, on the least favourable interpretation of the Regulation, Mr. Chambers could count for increments one year's service on

£320 and so begin on £330 in his new post, if the salary

of the new post had been £325 he would only have been eligible for the minimum salary.

I have therefore the honour to request that

I may be favoured with an authoritative interpretation of

the Regulation in question.

I have the honour to be,

sir.

Your most obedient humble servant,

7.2. Statts

Governor, &c.
